Steuben

Lower Kickapoo. Wide valley. Deep quiet.

Steuben is where the Kickapoo Valley opens up -- the river slows, the valley widens, and the bluffs pull back just enough to let in more sky. Reached by following WI-131 south along the river, or by winding down from the Eastman ridgetop on WI-179, it's a village of about 120 people who chose to be genuinely in the valley, not near it.

Hogback Prairie State Natural Area rises above the valley floor to the west, protecting one of the finest native prairie remnants in the region. Several cold-water tributaries support trout. What's here is quiet, natural, and real.
