Lynxville
Small village. Remarkable eagles. River life at its quietest.
Lynxville is a small Mississippi River village that earns its place on this list for one exceptional reason: it sits at the gateway to Pool 9, home to one of the largest bald eagle nesting populations in the entire Midwest. Volunteers have documented 140 confirmed nests in the 31-mile stretch of river between Genoa and Lynxville. Lock and Dam #9 anchors the village, walleye fishing at the Falling Rock landing draws serious anglers, and the bluff above town carries a cross and three shepherd figures that glow seasonally against the dark.
The rural roads back from the river are beautiful. Lynxville itself is genuinely small and unpolished -- the appeal is the river, the wildlife, and the solitude.
