PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI - August 10, 2026
A new Driftless Development Inc. program is inviting Prairie du Chien neighbors to roll up their sleeves, team up with the people next door, and bring fresh energy to their blocks.
DDI is launching the Neighborhoods Beautification Challenge, a matching grant program designed to help groups of neighbors make exterior improvements together. The goal is simple: when several homes on the same block improve at the same time, the whole neighborhood feels the difference.
The program was inspired by the successful Renaissance Block Challenge Grant in Oswego, New York, and was brought to DDI by Prairie du Chien residents Paulo and Heather Michelini, who also helped seed the effort with a $5,000 donation.
“This program is about more than paint, plants, porches, or sidewalks,” said Nikki Dudley, Executive Director of Driftless Development Inc. “It is about neighbors talking to each other, planning together, and taking visible pride in the place they live. One project can make a difference, but a whole block working together can create real momentum.”
To participate, at least half of the property owners on both sides of a street block must join together and submit one group application. Each group will name a project leader who will help collect participating names, addresses, before photos, and a basic description of the improvements planned for each property.

Eligible projects must be permanent exterior improvements visible from the street. Examples include landscaping, tree trimming, exterior painting, porch repair, walkway or sidewalk repair, steps, railings, and lighting. Do-it-yourself projects are welcome, and participants may also use a contractor if they choose. Temporary or seasonal items, such as lawn decorations, seasonal signs, or hanging flower baskets, are not eligible.
The program will match eligible project costs up to $500 per participating property owner, or up to $750 for corner properties. For example, if a homeowner completes a $400 eligible project, the program may reimburse $200 after the work is finished and proper documentation is submitted. Larger projects are welcome, but the match is capped at the program limit.
The Neighborhoods Beautification Challenge is beginning in Wards 2, 3, and 4, areas selected for early impact and visibility. DDI may expand the program to additional areas of Prairie du Chien in the future as funding allows. Eligible properties must be owner-occupied. Short-term rentals, campgrounds, and RV parks are not eligible.
Applications are now open and will be reviewed based on eligibility, available funding, and the quality of the proposed block project. Approved participants will receive reimbursement after completing the work and submitting qualifying receipts or proof of purchase along with photos of the finished improvements.
Residents interested in applying should start by talking with their neighbors. Once at least 50% of the property owners on both sides of the street block are ready to participate, the group can submit an application through Driftless Development Inc.
